Longtime Pleasantville resident Adrian McGuire, who taught at the Chappaqua Central School District for decades, died on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at the age of 99 at the Waterview Hills rehabilitation center in North Salem, according to his obituary.
Born in Pleasantville in June 1924, McGuire graduated from Regis High School and Fordham University before earning his Master's in History from Columbia University.
During his education, McGuire also spent time serving with the US Army in Europe during World War II.
After receiving his degrees, McGuire eventually took a job teaching 5th grade in Chappaqua, which began a 40-year career during which he made an impact on countless students, his obituary said.
Teaching primarily at the Grafflin School, McGuire was known for holding his students to a high standard while simultaneously guiding them along their journeys, according to his obituary.
His methods were definitely successful, as students from throughout the years would reach out to him through notes, Facebook, and even through attending his 99th birthday celebration. McGuire often heard from students who had reached their 50s, 60s, and 70s, proof of how long he was making an impact on children.
"His death brings the close of an era in the Chappaqua School district," McGuire's obituary read, continuing, "Adrian was a beloved master teacher."
He was so beloved by Chappaqua that upon his retirement, he was named as the hamlet's Citizen of the Year despite being from Pleasantville.
Even after retiring, McGuire still spent time guiding student teachers at Pace and Fordham Universities.
In addition to his lengthy career, McGuire was a dedicated reader and often spent time gardening.
He is survived by his niece, Carol Herrmann; his grandniece and nephew, Nell and John Herrmann; and two grand-nieces.
A service for McGuire will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8 between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Beecher Flooks Funeral Home located in Pleasantville at 418 Bedford Rd.
